The Islamic Republic of Iran Medical Council is a Non Governmental Organization(NGO)
which is responsible for licensing, authorization, and registration of the all health
care professionals
(except nurses who are registered by Iran Nursing Organization.)
to practice in Iran.
IRIMC strives to achieve the following goals:
1) Continued improvement of the quality of health
care
2) Improvement
of the medical
practice as well as medical education to a more excellent level.
3) Promoting as well as maintaining the quality of health care practice
4) Definition, protection and supporting patients' rights
5) Protection of the professional rights of the health care professionals
6) regulating bi or multilateral collaborations between health care professionals
and other associations & organizations.
All Iranian health care professionals are registered and
licensed by IRIMC.
IRIMC represents 281,400 members including general practitioners, specialist and sub-specialists
in medicine, general dentists, specialists in dentistry, pharmacists, clinical laboratory doctors, midwives, and other licensed health care
workers (such as physical therapists, optometrists,)
196 regional branches have been established nationwide through independent and simultaneous
election procedure. Each regional branch consists of a board of directors with regional
president, vice president, treasurer and secretary whom operate under the supervision
of IRIMC president and the supreme council. 2860 health
care professionals serve as the boards of directors of all IRIMC regional offices
in Iran.
Our history:
In 1964, the Medical Council was first legislated by the
National Parliament of Iran which has by now been amended eight times in the following
years. The last amendment was in 2004 when IRIMC legislation was approved by the
country’s Expediency Council.
The first election for Medical Council executive board was held in 1968 after which the
Medical Council officially started its operation.
From 1968 to 1979 (Islamic Revolution), 4 terms of elections were held in the Medical
Council.
Dr. Manouchehr Eghbal was the first president of this organization
who held this position for two terms.
He was succeeded by Dr. Yahya Adl and Dr. Maleki,
respectively.
From 1979(Islamic Revolution) to the present, 7 persons served as the
IRIMC presidents in 9 terms of its activity.
Dr abbas Sheibani was the first IRIMC president after the Islamic revolution who
served from 1981 to 1984.
He was succeeded by Dr Mohammad ali Hafizi (1984-1986), Dr Hadi Manafi (1986-1991),
Dr Iraj Fazel (1991-1996), and Dr Sadr (1996-2001) respectively.
Dr Zafarghandi was the 6th term president (2001-2005) who was succeeded by Dr Sadr
who held this position for 2
terms (2005-2013),Dr. Zali (2013-2017), and Dr Iradj Fazel (2017-2019)
The 11th term has commenced in February 2019 when Dr. Mohammadreza Zafarghandi was elected as the IRIMC President.
IRIMC Legislation: In 1964, the Medical Council was first legislated by the National

The IRIMC is based on its president and 3 principal bodies: The General Assembly,
the Supreme Council, and the Boards of Directors of the IRIMC regional offices.
IRIMC President: President
is the highest elected official and leads the executive board of this organization.
The president is elected by the General Assembly and appointed by president
of the country to a four-year term. Currently this position is held by Dr. Mohammadreza Zafarghandi.
The Board of Directors: All health care professionals registered by IRIMC are eligible to take
part in IRIMC election. The board of directors of each IRIMC branch is directly
elected by the health care professionals who work in the same district. Each board
of directors represents its delegates (the minimum one and the maximum 8) to arrange
the General Assembly.
The General Assembly: The
General Assembly is the main deliberative Assembly of the IRIMC that serves as its parliament.
It is composed of 224 members who elect IRIMC President as well as Supreme Council
members for a term of four years.
The Supreme Council: The Supreme Council is made up of 29 members consisting of 25 elected
members who are represented by the General Assembly and 5 appointed members:
2 representatives of Iran parliament health committee, 1 healthcare professional
as the representative of the Ministry of Health, and the Head of Iranian Legal
(Forensic) Medicine Organization. The Supreme Council is led by a chairperson, 2
vice-chairpersons and a secretary. The Supreme Council has the power to impeach
the IRIMC President.
